I know they are dumb.

One of the best water systems out there is called aquasana, its failry cheap rated to 500 gallons but can do 1000. I've owned it for 4 years and my "bottled" water from it is cleaner and much cheaper a few cents a gallon.

Bottle water is overrated and sometimes less clean than the water out of your tap thats through a filter.

Is Bottled Water The Right Choice?

Companies that market bottled water as being safer than tap water are defrauding the American public. - The U.S. FDA

Bottled water has become a multi-billion dollar business... now the fastest growing segment of the entire beverage industry... and the most profitable of all beverages.

Millions and millions of dollars are spent each week on advertising campaigns to give consumers the perception that bottled water comes from some pristine mountain spring or magical underground aquifer. The truth is that bottled water is often little more than tap water in a bottle.

The Federal regulations that govern bottled water only apply if it is transported across state lines, and then only require it to be "as good as" tap water. Most bottled water is bottled and sold within the same state to avoid regulations. There are no assurances or requirements that bottled water is of any higher quality than tap water.

In March of 1999‚ the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) released a report called "Bottled Water‚ Pure Drink or Pure Hype?" NRDC‘s report points out that as much as 40% of all bottled water comes from a city water system‚ just like tap water. The report also focuses on the fact that 60 to 70% of all bottled water is exempt from FDA‘s bottled water standards‚ because it is bottled and sold within the same state. Unless the water is transported across state lines‚ there are no federal regulations that govern its quality. According to the NRDC‚ "bottled water companies have used this loophole to avoid complying with basic health standards‚ such as those that apply to municipally treated tap water." Also‚ all carbonated or sparkling waters are completely exempt from FDA guidelines that set specific contamination limits.

According to the NRDC study‚ "even when bottled waters are covered by FDA‘s specific bottled water standards‚ those rules are weaker in many ways than EPA rules that apply to big city tap water." For instance‚ if we compare EPA regulations for tap water to FDA‘s bottled water rules: (these examples are quotes from the NRDC report)

City tap water can have no confirmed E.coli or fecal coliform bacteria. FDA bottled water rules include no such prohibition (a certain amount of any type of coliform bacteria is allowed in bottled water).

City tap water‚ from surface water‚ must be filtered and disinfected. In contrast‚ there are no federal filtration or disinfection requirements for bottled water.

Most cities using surface water have had to test for Cryptosporidium or Giardia‚ two common water pathogens‚ that can cause diarrhea and other intestinal problems‚ yet bottled water companies do not have to do this.

City tap water must meet standards for certain important toxic or cancer-causing chemicals‚ such as phthalate (a chemical that can leach from plastic‚ including plastic bottles); some in the industry persuaded FDA to exempt bottled water from the regulations regarding these chemicals.

City water systems must issue annual "right to know" reports‚ telling consumers what is in their water. Bottlers successfully killed a "right to know" requirement for bottled water.

The Natural Resources Defense Council report concluded that; "Therefore‚ while much tap water is indeed risky‚ having compared available data‚ we conclude that there is no assurance that bottled water is any safer than tap water."

The reality of bottled water is that people pay from $1 to $4 a gallon for the perception of higher quality‚ when in fact‚ the quality of bottled water is at best "unknown"!

A humorous, but insightful quote, from a national radio personality went;

"Throughout the years man has come up with many ways to measure things.
Noah used cubits to measure the Arc.
We use carats to measure gemstones.
We use lbs. to measure our weight.
We use inches, feet and yards to measure distance.
And to measure the intelligence of consumers... they put water in plastic bottles... to see who would buy it."

Point-of-Use water treatment‚ with a quality in home water filtration system‚ is by far the most economical‚ the most convenient and the most effective way of producing healthy, great tasting water. Filtering out the chlorine‚ lead and other contaminants with a quality home water filtration system‚ at the point of use‚ just prior to consumption‚ is the only way to know for sure about the quality of your water.

Aquasana provides water that is higher in quality than any bottled water‚ for only 9 cents/gal... GUARANTEED!

Well, people are supposed to drink 8-10 cups of water a day. Not all of that is from home though, since there's the water cooler, fountains, sodas, and other beverages. There are 16 cups in a gallon, so that gallon of water can last you, me, anyone, at least two days... So, seven days a week, bottled water at this price of $10.00 per gallon, as you claim would end up costing $35.00 per week...

But let's be real, if you want, you can get by with tap water, which is free in some areas, and less than ten cents a gallon where I live. People who buy bottled water are rich morons, who would probably spend money to get bottled air if someone offered it to them. Those of us with a brain inside our skulls can get by on 35 cents a week for drinking water, and save $34.65 a month.

My car, on the other hand, can hold ten gallons of gasoline, and I'm lucky if that lasts me through the week. At three dollars a gallon, that's $30.00 a week, only five bucks a week less than the bottled water habit.

Now suppose I don't want to pay three dollars a gallon on gas? Well, fine and good, because it's actually three fifty where I live, making a gas habit cost exactly the same prices as an all bottled water beverage diet... Only, if I think the gas is too expensive, I can't go out and put tapwater in my tank. I can't even save a few bucks to get Kerosene, which costs about two dollars a gallon, and I danm sure can't stick corn husks down my gas tanks for cheaper like ethanol proponents brag about being able to do.

Bottom line, I can by the perrier if I want to, but if I expect to hold down a real job, and get a real date, I need my gas, and as others have said, I've never seen a gallon of bottled water for ten bucks, so the gas still costs more.

Do we need more reasons to complain? Well, why are the gas prices up? When I joined the navy, the prices were a dollar fifty a gallon, and we had just as many refineries working, and the price for a barrel of crude was NOT twice as much as it is now. Where's all that extra money going to? Is it because OPEC is selling us less oil? no! Now we can buy oil from Iraq, before we couldn't.

I complain about the water too - I never buy it unless I am out of the country. But the cost of gas has been artificially inflated by people who are investing in the futures market. It really has nothing to do with supply and demand - at least not at this point. But now that you are getting comfortable with $3 a gallon - they can lower it to $2 a gallon and you will think you are getting a bargain.

I'm with you. $3.00 worth of gasoline moves me and over a ton of automobile 40 miles. I can't think of anything I can buy for $3 that does such an incredible thing.

The world would be a better place if we were paying $30 a gallon for gasoline. We would design our neighborhoods to have stores and other services in walking distance. We would have less pollution, fewer people dying in automobile accidents. We would live closer to where we work and not spend so much time commuting. We wouldn't be paving over half the world for roads and parking lots. People would be healthier because they would walk more. More people would work from home.

When you buy it by the dollar bottle, you are buying convenience. Actual bottled water costs about 25 cents a gallon at the water store near where I live. Even so, the guy who runs the place makes a lot of money.

Btw, if you hadn't noticed, water is the new oil. This trend is likely to increase over the coming decades.

I don't complain about gas prices, I don't drive all over God's green acres to save a penny per gallon. It costs what it costs, and I need it, so I pump it,..and most of the time I don't even know how much a gallon it is. Just like milk, if it was 5$ a gallon, I'd still buy it.

I have never spent more than two dollars for a gallon of water.
I own a trucking company and it costs around 600.00 dollars to fill a truck. Yes, I am complaining because the pay for shipping has not increased yet due to the large amount of 'outlaw' trucks in service.

Good point...especially since so much of the 'premium' water out there is just tap water run through a filter.

My guess is that some people are germ freaks and some people use bottled water as a kind of status symbol...hey look at me...I am too good to drink ordinary water....that sort of thing.

Anyone paying $10/gal for drinking water that is also complaining about the price of gas just likes to complain.

Raise the price of drinking water to $10/gal, and there will be riots, not just complaints.
