I've been to one (I was denied) and it was just about exactly like the guy above described. There was my lawyer, the judge, a job specialist, a person doing a transcript, and someone else that I can't remember.
My advice is this: I tried to be as honest as possible. Don't do this. I'm not telling you to lie by any means, but make sure that you don't try to be honest. They don't care about you, and if you are honest enough to merely want some kind of partial judgment because you only rate your pain as a 5 on their scale of 10, you will get nothing. They know the money is running out and they are giving it out for political reasons rather than to the people who need it or whose great-grandparents or grandparents worked to build the government account. Whine as much as you can--if you don't, you won't get anything (except abuse) anyway unless you fit their racial/sexual profile. Even benefits for their intended persons will run out very soon, so don't count on them.

I forgot to mention one important thing: When I got my lawyer, they referred me to a local clinic that is now giving me free insulin. If they hadn't, I'd be dead right now. So if you need benefits for medical purposes and they don't end up letting you have Medicaid (or Medicare or whatever it is that they don't give young white guys), try to see if you have a volunteer clinic in your area.

they are determining if you fit in the legal category.
i have been to one. they asked about the disability,
the work done before the disability and there was an
expert there about the job availability of that kind of job
in our area (which was zero and that's what he said)
but it was still not awarded. they tape or record it.
so there were microphones. it was in a sort of conference
room. there were only about 4 people there

without an advocate on your side, you're gonnan lose. contact your county hospital and ask if they have a staff ssda advocate. if so, get him/her to be your rep, otherwise any ssdi lawyer will represent you if you have a good case. his fee is fixed by law not to exceed 25% of the award. that amount is set by ssa not the lawyer. he cannot collect any higher fee.
