I've been into this arguement before . . . I AM a Yankee fan! LOL
I see it like this . . . the Yankees ARE good players. They have a long history of great things (as well as some other ball teams).
The higher ups can afford them, so they are offered the right price for their services. They (players) choose to go to the team b/c of the pay, no doubt. I'm sure they also like the reputation, too, of the team.
So are the players "bought"? I guess so, but only b/c they are great players and wanted bad enough by the team.
Consider this . . .you are a doctor who performs miraculous surgeries with an incredible life-saving reputation. You are successful and good at what you do. You are making $80,000 a year. Then you are offered $150,000 a year and the community (where the new job is located) wants you. Would you take the better income to support your family?
I hope you don't take that posed question as cynical - it's not meant to be. Just trying to make a point. Most anyone would do themselves better if they could.
The (individual players) Yankees are good. The club has the money to pay them. Of course the team wants only the best players!

Face it buddy. When you have all the money in the baseball world, you can get free agent players when you offer them twice as much as everyone else. The Yankees and Red Sox are the sole reason why baseball needs a salary cap. You have to make it fair to small market teams like the Twins and the Devil Rays. Come on, dude. Think.

The Yankees would not have won four world championships without their farm system. Yes, they are do make a lot of money, and they have every right to spend it as they want. They also pay tens of millions of dollars in luxury tax and revenue sharing every years, including $80 million last year. But no one ever talks about that do they? Also, it is generally assumed that teams who do receive millions of dollars in revenue sharing dollars, are putting the money toward their teams, but many, including Kansas City, Tampa Bay, and Cincinnati do not. That isn't right.
Chicagoflip, if you were making millions of dollars, through your own hard work, marketing, and sales, would YOU like to have to pay a portion of your profits to other people? Money that you earned? How about if there was no proof that they were using the money for which it was intended, improving their team or product? Baseball is spread too thin, with too many teams, there are several cities with teams that just can't support them. That isn't the Yankees' fault.

I'm so sick of Red Sux fans complaining about how the Yankees spend so much money... what the hell do they expect Steinbrenner to do with it? And just out of curiosity who spends the most on payroll after the Yankees? Oh yeah, Boston with over $140 million.

This has been exactly my question for quite awhile. Being a Yankee fan living in Red Sox territory, I hear this all the time. And I completely agree...if you have the money to spend...you would spend it the same way.

So what if the Yankees spend a lot they can afford it. Are there any fans out there who would not trade your favorite teams owner for George Steinbrenner in a NY minute ? Didn't think so

No team buys players as there is no soccer-like transfer fee system in North American sports. What "buy" means is teams like the NYY, Bos and other big money clubs do is they can afford high salaried stars.
I could care less. If you have money, spend it. My A's do fine with a small mkt. revenues and the Marlins have won one World Series with a lower budget team (the other was bug bucks).
