Genetically, there is enough variation that the chances of a birth defect are about the same as any two random strangers bearing children.

24 states apparently prohibit 1st cousins marrying, but no countries in Europe prohibit it. The bias against first cousins marrying seems to be a North American cultural phenomenon.

In some states in the US it is legal. The issue is not if it is morally wrong, since the law seeks to make actions criminal to protect individual rights against the actions of others. The problem with inbreeding is that it creates genetic problems-abnormalities. I think that cousins are probably far enough apart to avoid this, it is looked down upon in general cause people think its wierd.

Um it's just there is too much shared genetic material...I'm not trying to be insulting but geez they would share the same Grandparents...their children would be inbred and probably be either deformed or mentally retarted in some way.

It is illegal here in the u.s. Also when first cousins breed, there comes genetic disorders into the children that are not present when "spreading the genes" so to speak. It causes too many health problems and there are too many genetic risks involved.
