Santa is probably as real as any other member of the pantheon of human religions, perhaps even more so. After all, His avatars appear on a regular basis, where devotees may exhort them to bring the blessings of material wealth as reward for their good behaviour. Many devotees compose epistles to Him with the same goal in mind. Hymns and sacred scripture are recited in His name.
However, the cult of Santa does tend to have an interesting trait of a steady-state membership. Most devotees ultimately lose faith in Santa and try to fill the vacuum with some other theology or philosophy. However, conversion from the cult is counter-balanced by an influx of new devotees on a regular basis. The odd thing about the cult is that the proselytizing is most often done by former and non-believers, making it rather unique in that regard.
(Note: I make some exaggerations, but Santa does appear in my mind very much like a religion.)

To some he is.
To some he's not.
He only exists if you want him to be.
