Some people judge and dimiss things without ever knowing or understanding them.
It is extremely sexually provocative. Although I love it as an art form it would be a lie to say otherwise. The movements and excercises were designed not only to intice, but also to develop the internal muscles related to sex, reproduction and childbirth.
My wife and roommate will be taking it in the fall (can't wait), but my wife's parents are really disturbed by the idea and keep hinting that it will corrupt her in some undefined way.

People associate belly dancing with lap dancing or stripping. They think of it as the whore-ish moves the people on music videos do. It's those slutty dancers that give belly dancing a bad name. Belly dancing is sensual, not sexual. Belly dancing is a great form of exercise and a way to open up to other cultures and ideas. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. It's even appropriate for children to learn. There are some educational videos for it if you are interested. (there are some videos for children too.)

This is an easy one. I don't think they think it is bad, I think they think it is too sexual, and so it must be bad. And if the people in question are older people they consider belly dancing to be very sexual and tend to be embarrassed by it. Others just aren't comfortable with their own sexuality and therefore aren't comfortable with belly dancing. I think if you take the time to learn the true art of belly dancing, and if you are comfortable with your own body...you got something others wish they could do or wish they had the guts to do. You gotta admit, it is sexy when done correctly.

bellydancing is a beautiful spiritual way of connecting to universe. it's completely non-sexual. traditionally it was done in private, by women for women, with dances to mark milestones in life like menstration, marraige, etc etc

I don't, & I haven't known anyone else to either! I think it's a beautiful dance that you rarely see anymore. A woman belly dancing is very sexy!

I would love to be a belly dancer and I think my husband would like it too! I'd have private dance shows for him and...hmmmmm...I'm taking lessons!

it is not bad...it's a really hard dance to learn...but some who don't appreciate the art of dance call it the "stripper dance"
