I remember seeing somewhere on the internet that Mattel would make a variant edition of Superman and Supergirl in Wave 2 of their DC Superhero toy line. But I have not heard anything since then, and that was a while ago. They were supposed to be switched in with the later shipments of wave 2, but I've not seen anything. And now wave 3 is starting to come out in some places, does anybody know what happened?

The variants are set to arrive this month. You can still pre-order the Superman variant from BigBadToyStore.com (a great on-line toy-seller). However, the Supergirl variant is already sold-out. BBTS often finds additional stock and will make every effort to find you the toy you're looking for. I've ordered from them many times before and I've been very pleased with this company. Good luck in your search.
