Auto technician who will be getting out of it along with many others as the pay for it is dropping substantially every year becuase people don't understand the knowledge experience and tool bill it takes to keep up with cars these days. I pay a tool man 100.00 per week and have for the last number of years. The Autonations and group1's are taking over the dealerships and you can't afford to work for them the rate of pay the technician gets is about 10-20 % of the rate charged to the customer and it was about 40% when I started in this buisness. but the salesman and managers are taking home the bacon so to speak and clearing from double to triple what the guys who sweat like dogs and work there tails off for the smallest cut and we only get to see the angry customers when we make a mistake and they expect us to pay for it. I used to not have a problem with it when the pay scale was a little more fair.
Shop flat rate - 99.47
tech. flat rate avg.- 20.00 ( optimisticly some more most less)
Also times are being cut daily. just because we get better you think we should get paid less. I can do somethings very quickly because of repition, does this mean I should be paid less.
You spent 4 years getting a college degree and work for the same company before and after do you expect a decrease in pay after you graduate.Doesn't make sense to get angry for being charged 1.3 hours when it only took the tech 45 min. it probably took him 3 hours at one point that is why it is flag hours and we are on commision. We don't get 40 hours guaranteed every week. If we only run 20 and we are there 80 then we get paid for 20. at the avg. That comes to about 5.00 per hour on a slow week which to my recelection is under minimum wage and I own over $50,000.00 in tools and have to by certain new tools at least once a month as well as maintain the power and pneumatic tools I currently have. Then after a couple of years I rarely use certain tools (specialty) such as carb. adjuster and such. I don't think I have opened my carb. drawer in 3 years. I also bet I have over $2000.00 in that drawer unused.
