ACCEPT your parent's answer . . .
Grow up, and away from them, and their home, and support . . .
THEN -
Get your snake, and live the rest of your life, by your rules and choices.
Peace - young one.

Show your parents that you are responsilble enough to care for a snake. Keep on researching, checking out books from the library, do reports, etc.

Do extra things around the house without being asked, and don't expect any money for doing it. Be courtious and respectfull. Show your mom that you are a gentelman in the works, and that you value her decisions.

Save up your money for everything you will need to care for your pet for a full year (that includes heating, cages, repairs, food, decorations for the cage, and vet care).

If you show her that this is a serious thing for you, and not a whim, and show her that you will respect her choice, then perhaps she will say yes.

Also find out if she has a fear of snakes. If she does, perhaps she would go for a lizard of some kind.

I know it isn't what you want to hear but if she doesn't want you to have one, you can't. It's her house and she can set the rules. However, the only possibility that you have is if you sit down with her and, using a mature and responsible voice (along with an attitude of curiousity mingled with reverent respect) ask if there is ANYTHING you can do to get her to change her mind. Can I take on more responsibility around the house? Is there something I can do to prove that I will be responsible with this pet?

Maybe suggest that you do some extra chores and that you do them religiously without being reminded for a month straight..or something like that.

She may be surprised by your respectful and compliant attitude. Or she may be so terrified of snakes that she can't handle it one way or another. If that's the case, you'll have to live with it. It really seems like a big deal now but most adults can't have everything their own way either. There are bosses, landlords, city councils, etc. that force conformity on one level or another. Good luck.

you may not like my answer

it is unfair to ask your parents to get you any pet since ultimately there will be a time when they will be responsible for it either finanacially (buying cage, heat lamps, heat rocks, frozen pinkies) or they will be stuck with it when you go to College or move out (very few landlords allow pets)
All pets should be family pets - meaning that your parents must want one too.....
Snakes dont neccessarily benefit from being a pet so in a small way the industry of breeding snakes for pets is somewhat cruel - they are happier in the wild, ver yfew people can afford cages large enough for a snake to really enjoy.

I was a kid once too and really wanted a horse, my folks could afford one but never got me one - now I am an adult - saved my money - bought my own place and have whatever pets I want...I suggest you do the same

is there any reason at all that you shouldn't have one? anyway show them the research you found and reasure them that you will not let the snake get lose, make sure to get a cage that can be secured with a latch, get something that stays moderatly smallish like a corn snake, also tell them you'll keep it in your room and they'll never even have to see it. Also take Tara D's advice, sounds like that stuff might help a lot. need any more help you can e-mail me:psycho_sweetie_92@yahoo.com

I'm also 14, I have a pet red tailed boa, hes so sweet =), seems the only difference between me and you is that my parents actually like snakes and it didn't take much to convince them.

Good luck!

Badgering never works on a parent. You need a different approach and technique.

Start off with bringing home a pig or some huge farm animal. That snake will start to look like a better choice for a pet.

Go to a pet store and ask the worker there to talk with your parents. They should be able to answer some questions they might have about snakes. It should also make them feel better about getting snake, considering they just talked to a person who handles them.

OK if u want to get ur parents to say yes, set the bar high. in every family, there is things u r allow to do and things u r not.if u want her to say yes to u getting a snake, forget about the snake and ask for something more outrageous and she will go down to giving u what u ask for first.

Ask for something more dangerous, like a baby crocodile or start asking for driving lessons and a car.
But realize owning a snake is alot of work and as with owning any pet its not something that you can throw away when the novelty wears off.

Tell them that black/green/rat snakes are absolutely harmless, you'll take care of it and make sure it NEVER gets loose. If it does, then you'll immediately get rid of it and not ask again. You will buy its mice and you will feed it in your own room and no one will watch, etc. I have no idea what the reason could be except that lots of people are afraid of snakes in general, even the harmless ones. Good luck.
