Can't seem to pull seat up at front like the Owner's Manual suggests

Pull harder, that is how you remove it, sometimes they can be tricky, more like stuck. Just yank hard on the front of the seat... it will come up. Trust me on this, I deal with it EVERY day at work.

why would u have to replace the battery by removeing the rear seats?!?
the battery is located under the hood in the engine compartment.

push back on the front of the seat so that it moves back about a half-inch, then lift up
you have to push on the lower part of the seat frame to get it to move
