Because they like going against one of the 10 commandments- Thou shall not covet thy neighbors (fill in the blank)... Also because of the media.

This is because every kid thinks that they have to compete with other kids with there stuff and they always the newest things b/c they think it makes them popular

1) you have not been spending enough time to talk to your teen
2) you need to check your own family habits and values
they are what they are because of family and friends influence. and that is why i think you have not been doing the above 2 sufficiently

Because they want to be 'in', so they have to get all the 'in' stuff? For some others, perhaps out of interest (Eg. gadgets)
