Z is a marketing ploy to make it have the sales appeal and a tie in with the Z28 which is a Camaro.
Someone who might not buy a dream car Camaro might be more tempted to buy a cavalier with the tie in.

Every Cavalier ever produced straight up sucks.
The Z is just some marketing thing Chevy uses to get people to think that they are actually fast.

It is just an option code.Z71 on trucks is a option code for suspension or off road package.
