there is nothing funny about the smell. On the other hand the sound can be really funny under the right circumstances. For example, if someone can let loose after Bush had said that we have to invade Iraq because they have weapons of mass destruction, maybe the invasion would never have taken place.

Definitely the sound...you can't smell the sound of a fart, but the smell of the gas could kill you.

Nothing is funny about the smell of a fart, trust me. Especially when you are lying blissfully in a warm and cozy bed, and of all the people, your spouse lets one rip.
What pisses me off even more is that she will lie there and pretend that nothing has happened. Almost as if she can not smell her own fart.

Sound is by far the funniest part. I knew a guy who used to cup his hand over his butthole and the fart would sound like a bugle or trumpet with incredible volume.

If you could fart without the smell it would be comedy heaven. For me, the smell TOTALLY ruins the punchline.
