I'm guilty of spending more for a set of wheels and tires than my car's initial purchase price... on two separate cars. One of them was a low-buck race car, and race tires don't come cheap. The other one looks a bit more like what you probably have in mind... but the original wheels wouldn't fit over a set of upgraded brakes that I had installed.
In many cases, though, it's just a different sort of fashion or status symbol.

They die on the day the last lease payment is due.
Made with cheap plastic, in and out.
A small collision, and their toast.
