I'm planning to go to an audition and one of the things you have to do is "sing a song in your own key." I know it's probably a simple and stupid question, but what does that mean?

There are as many keys as notes on a piano... and more.
One for each, actually.
To sing in your own key, means to adapt the song to the range of your voice. Maybe you can sing "My All" (Mariah Carey) really good, but if you start singing it with a C... and not a G like Mariah does. See? 'Cause you probably don't have such a high pitch voice, but can work better with your lower notes.
That's what it means.
If you don't know how to read music, try finding a pianist that can help you figure out in what key the song you want is more confortable to you... so you can walk into the audition saying "'My All' in C Major, please!" like a pro!

It means to adjust the song to your range. For example, if some notes are too high for your range, you take every note of the song down a couple notches.

I assume it refers to the key you sing in most naturally and comfortably.
