They usually don't eat a day in advance (not enough room in them). Take the male out. The stress of having him there may cause her to eat the young.

I answered a similar question the other night, was it yours? I really can't remember XD

Anyways! Hamsters should always be kept individually as they are very territorial animals. It is possible she is just acting this way because she is stressed with the male in there. The first thing you should do is put one of them in a seperate cage.

The gestation period of a syrian hamster (which is the common one found in a pet store, other than dwarf hamsters) is about 16 days. The male should especially be seperated soon if she is pregnant, as it is possible for him to get her pregnant almost immediately after she gives birth. This may also stress her into eating her own young.

If she is pregnant, and that's why she's been acting this way, then you can probably expect the babies soon. Remove the male and make sure to change her bedding as soon as possible so you don't have to worry about it when the babies are born. Add a piece or two of cat or dog food to her food for extra protein while she's pregnant and nursing. Read up online about breeding hamsters for more details on when they should be weaned and when the males should be seperated from the females.

I would also start looking for possible homes, as hamsters can have fairly large litters. If she does have babies, do not disturb them or the mother for at least a few days, other than giving food and water.

Well , difficult question !
I've had lots of female hamsters but they never behaved the
same way . . .
Of course , she will "close the door " for intercourses , but it
doesn't mean a lot . . .
In my case , the cage which I put on top of a desk , was
always open !
So she loved going down the towel I put as a ladder in order
for her to go shopping for the food on her own !
The reward was just down the desk . . .
She was always free to get what she wanted !
Someday , she refused to leave the cage and was waiting for
me to feed her !
She was nervous and asked for more food over and over .

The size of a hamster doesn't mean anything , but at that
time , I knew she was about to deliver .

Well , try not to feed her too much and check if she's asking
for more ! If she is "nesting " , she will ask for more !

I guess you know that hamsters hide some food in their
cheeks , right ?

Anyway , whatever you do , don't stress her !!!
Those small animals could die in a minute in a
"self given heart attack" !
And if you try to caress her and she bites you , well ,
that's it ! She wants to protect her tummy !
Hope that wil help you , indeed .

By the way , in my case , out of 14 different females ( and
males ) , only 1 kid died !
But it doesn't mean the father did it !
I think it was probably a "miscarriage" , that's it !

Let me know , please . . .

Thanks !

Take the male out now.

You won't know exactly when she'll give birth without knowing what day she concieved. Seeing her fighting with the male is not proof she is pregnant.

I don't have hamsters but my friend is a hamster breeder. He informed me one species does not live well together male+female except when the female is ready to mate, then afterwards you must remove the male. Which species of hamster is yours?

Hi, my kids hamsters just had babies 2 days ago, and when i called the pet store and asked them about it, they said that if they haven't already eaten the babies, and they were taking good care of them, then they probably wouldn't eat them. I have 2 hamsters in the same cage, and at first, they were bickering back and forth, i told my husband they fought like a married couple. we didn't realize that one of them was pregnant, until my youngest said hey mommy, there is something moving in here, and then he squealed that it was babies. but both hamsters go down in the little nest that they made, and every time one of them comes up, i see about 6 little babies down there, and i have yet t figure out which is which, because the babies stick to both them when they come out of the nest. until i see it, i will not believe that either one of them is going to harm the babies though, they are being responsible little parents. hope this helped out some.

Seprate the male and the female right now!!!! The male will hurt the babies. Try and make her comfortable. Then when the time comes, she will begin to grunt and push. Try not to touch her. If she is squealing in pain, get a vet right away! Also if you are noticing any spots of blood in her cage, get a vet. Something might be wrong with the pregnancy.

Good Luck!

male and female hamsters should not be housed together as they will eventually kill each other. Ask the pet store if you don't believe me. The male will kill the babies too when they are born unless the mother kills him first. Get a second cage and be patient it only takes a hamster a month to give birth.

Your hamster will give birth after nine weeks after the start of pregnancy. And if you aren't sure, then wait till you see pink bald objects in the cage. Those are the babies.

I think they stay pregnant for 2 weeks or 2 months. If you can,try to get her to a local pet store they are big help. Also go to google and look up hamsters it will give you pictures, what they can eat,and stuff about pregnancy.Seperate the mom and babies from the dad because the dad will eat the babies-nasty but true.

i have a gerbil so i think it will be the same. well mine gained wait, laid a lot more, and made a nest in a safe place, like in a hidden place or under something. They can have babies in 42 days or more. they can delay there birth if they have another litter. It sounds like she is pregnent. so wait about 50 days counting the first weeks. if she has a litter she has a litter by then she is pregnent. if she doesn't she still might but i highly doubt it. good luck.
