Hi!
Usually the A Capella performances are saved for live auditions, but you can include one song a capella in your demo if you want. Remember that a demo is just a trial... they will always ask you to go sing live for them if they like what they hear in your CD. So, if you chose to include an a capella song in your demo, have ready another one for your live audition.
You should include in your demo two or three songs from different styles (one up tempo and one ballad is ideal), do them with music. People sometimes does not take the time to imagine "how would this voice sound in other genres" - usually busy music execs, so, do the work for them! That's what you should be concerned about in a demo.
Use the music in the tracks your tracks, that's what it is for. A capella songs in a CD can be equally distorted or re-arranged in editing, so don't be thinking that a recorded a capella song guarantees to the person who hears it that you have a nice voice, ok? If you have a nice voice, you have it. Period. Music or no music. The live a capella song will always be your last test,ok?
Also... don't include "regular" songs. Try to find new compositions, or write songs of your own. Music execs don't appreciate listening to covers - again. They've got the real artists and they can hear them anytime they want. And nobody sings Christina Aguilera like Christina Aguilera. Avoid being compared to an already known artist. Be original. You know your voice and know what suits it best, so include new songs to let it be noticed!

Goodluck!

I prefer A Capella because then the person listening can see if you have a good voice or not. With all the music, you could have edited your voice or the music can take away from your voice. If you play the music yourself then put some A Capella and some not. A really pretty song to sing A Capella for a guy or a girl is "Amo Vitam" which I have heard sung with music by Rosenstolz. Good luck with the demo!

I was told by an agent, to always have a total of five songs on your demo and one song should be A capella.

Of course it can be a capella. It can be whatever you want it to be. Don't ever change your style just to fit the norm. You absolutely have to do whatever music you want. Because if it's not how you want it, you can't put your heart into it completely, and then it ends up second rate.
