Wouldn't it be good to travel the galaxy helping races that don't have: modern medicine, and freeedom, and enough food?

Yes it would create problems, but wouldn't the good results outweigh the bad?

I've seen sick and injured people in Afghanistan who would have died, if we hadn't been there to give them medical treatment.

I think non interference is overrated.

Thank you. I think I understand the other side better.

Is it an insult to say someone is acting American?

I hope you are not a jealous foreigner, or a self hating America.

I don't agree fully with it but for the most part I do. For example, a primative race that is boiling roots for medicin, I think should be taught simple medical care or if you find a starving coloney give them a replicator for food. I don't think that you should give them extream, unnecessary advances like giving them a shuttle craft or anything like that. Just stuff that will help them survive while still letting them advance fairly normaly.

part of technological development is the slow growth that allows maturity for its use. our modern age is proof that technology that comes too rapidly often leaves questions of ethics and allows for a great amount of abuse. today cloning is accessible before the moral questions have been answered. so as the technology grows so does our awareness of the ethics. only time and experience can provide that. you can't walk into a room and give everyone super powers and then tell them how to use them for good alone. you are bound to have abusers and tyrants.

imagine if hitler had access to germ warfare. do you think he would have hesitated to use it? would the outcome of WWII have been different?

i think its great to end problems of the world that are otherwise devastating. it was modern medicine that allowed for the development of a polio vaccine that saves millions from lifelong suffering. if that were provided for a budding planet currently in the throes of loss it would be an amazingly kind gift. but providing medicinal access would also introduce unknowns to a planet that may not be ready for that type of advancement. handing over a vaccine without the know-how for its use and development would be cruel.
santosh is right about earth being the united states of the universe. just because earth got to where it is does not mean it is the only route. each planet deserves the opportunity to evolve into its own uniqueness. evolution involves suffering and loss but that may be what makes the planet strong.
the prime directive is not for the purpose of allowing others to suffer. it is just a very non-american way of coming into contact with new people so some may find it hard to swallow.

but it seems to me that you have already made up your mind about your thoughts. you're not looking for a well-thought out answer with some perspective. you want someone to agree with you. i just made the mistake of assuming that it was a question not a forum for support.

1 I agree with it ( wish we could apply it on earth)
2 The problem is when two societies merge one being way more advanced than the other usually the lesser society is absorbed into the more advanced or the lesser advanced ceases to exist.
( American Indians and other history) So if you really want a diverse universe you have to let them develop on their own (who knows they might even come up with a better way!)

The Prime Directive was established because not everyone can handle power.

GOD has practiced the "Prime Directive" for nearly 6,000 years! Man has gone "his own way"--and see the results! But soon GOD will be forced to intervene to SAVE us from extinction! So much for Prime Directives! KIRK OUT!((((((Beaming))))))))
