It is brake dust, they were right. I don't think there's anything you can do to stop it. It's a part of the normal things the car does. When the brakes are used, there's some of the pad that rubs off as a dust. That's what you see.

What I did was to remove my tire and checked for missing or broken disk brake pads or other parts. I bought a tube of special hi-temperature molybedenum grease for disk brakes. After removing the caliper pin/ slider /guide and cleaned its sleeve (pushed through and out very easily) I found some rust and red dust all over the pins. A small wire brush cleaned it up in 20 seconds. I put clean new grease and back in the pins went. The problem I found was that my brakes did not fully release, thereby causing the disks to continually wear out. Even though the truck was in a brake shop for repairs I think its one of those small tedious jobs most mechanics will not do when fixing a system in need of new pads or shoes. It worked for me.

Use a quality wheel cleaner to remove the brake dust ie: Meguiers (which is my favorite) I would not use the dust covers as they could cause brake overheating issues I would think due to the loss of airflow to the brakes.

First examine the draw close brake cylinder. There are 2 sections, one for the front and one for the rear. make effective both are finished of brake fluid. once you replaced the front brake pads, did you sparkling around the piston that pushes the pad hostile to the rotor? Brake pad residue blended with highway grease can inhibit the piston from operating properly. basically curious, how did you comprehend that's totally the front brakes not operating nicely? Did you examine the situation of the footwear on the rear? in the adventure that they are ok, attempt adjusting them tighter.

When my brakes were new they left junk on my rims. It just went away after awhile. The Mr Clean tire and rim cleaner really works good. Good luck in keeping them clean.
