It is best to use a parts cleaning solution. Bearings can get messy. I use mineral spirits in my parts washer. You can remove it without any solvent, but you can't really inspect them closely that way. In the hubs, wipe it out with paper towels. The bearings themselves you can wipe off the grease and use the new grease to push out the old.

use a grease cleaning agent such a var-sol, it is usually the best. DO NOT USE LACQUER THINNER.............PLEASE DON'T.

i always use kerosene to wash out bearings.or you could use solvent
