Cell phone headphones not working -- can't figure it out?

Motorola E815 cell phone, verizon, about 6 months old. Stereo headphones from Verizon. Yesterday it was fine, I was listening to my mp3s on the headphones. Today I plug in the headphones and no sound going to the headphones, all the sound is coming out the cell phone speakers. Do you think the problem is with the headphones or the socket in the cell phone? It doesn't look like there are any obstructions in the socket and the jack is going in there smoothly. thank you
