From the facts I've researched, the main reason that the government banned marijuana was to stall the immagration of Mexicans into America. Before it was banned, the government actually tried to switch the population of Americans over to marijuana during prohibition.

In the present tabacco is far worse for ones health than marijuana and most of the propaganda that the government used to cause negative beliefs of marijuana in the past have been disproven by science.

So what is going to have to happen for marijuana to be legalized?

First of all, your research is flawed. The government in the form of Harry J. Anslinger a jealous crony of Eliott Ness brought about the Federal laws making marijuana illegal. He wanted the fame that Ness was getting (you can see how well that worked). It had nothing to do with the immigration of Mexicans to America. Blacks in the south and some ghettos in the east were smoking pot. Anslinger wrote articles for newspapers spreading the tale that Blacks were using pot to take advantage of otherwise 'virtuous' young white girls. When the papers ran the stories, Anslinger would take them around to various areas of the country and use them as "proof" of the menace of marijuana. As time went by, states started writing their own laws which varied greatly around the country. This gave Anslinger the edge he needed to approach the Federal government with a proposal for a unified law banning marijuana.

To answer your question, it would take a majority of the government, all three branches, to be liberal enough to agree on changing the laws. Conservatives won't go for it, unless they can be shown just how many billions of dollars could be made on marijuana tax (which, by the way, already is on the books). The only issue for us would be the quality of government sponsored pot. The FDA would have to regulate the THC levels and so on, you wouldn't be allowed to grow your own, you would be arrested for tax evasion. Look for it in another 50 years.

In order for the government to legalize marijuana they need to find a way to tax it if they can't make money off of it they will not legalize it. It is a known fact that more people get into serious car accidents killing innocent people being impaired from alcohol than marijuana. Also I think the government feels marijuana is a product they can't control the production of so until they have things under control to there satisfaction and get tax money for it they will keep it illegal.

Since the majority of marijuana is not grown in the United States it would take a lot to make marijuana legal. America would have to pay other governments to import their supply which would far outweigh the taxes they would get from selling it here.

I've never heard the immigration slant before.
I've always heard that it is too hard to regulate, because it will grow anywhere...which is why it is called ditch weed, cause it easily grows there. The government wouldn't have a way to collect taxes and have regulations on it.

prob never, too easy too grow, no way for the government to regulate , just throw a hand full of seeds in soil and they will grow like "weeds". so any kid can get a hold of them.
Pharmaceuticals will be mad b/c marijuana heals allot of ills, w/o allot of side effects, plus they are fun side effects :o)
