When I had roosters that I couldn't catch, I would shoot their necks with a 22 rifle bullet. They would bleed out, and I wouldn't have to touch them to kill them. Of course you can only do this out in the country where there aren't any houses nearby.
One time I saw a chicken killer that looked like a large paper cutter. You would hold the chicken and swing the blade down for a quick kill.
Some of the older generation would wring their necks, but unless you know what you are doing, I wouldn't try this.
The most common way to kill a chicken is to hold or tie its feet together, then hold the bird until its neck is over a chunk of wood. With one smooth motion, chop the head off with a sharp ax. If you can get a killing cone, this holds the birds down and makes killing them easier. If you can't get a cone, pound a couple of large nails into a 2 by 4 frame, so the neck will hold still better.
When a chicken farm (factory) has chickens ready to get butchered, large hoses are taken inside the building. These chickens are sucked out and into crates to be taken to a processing factory. They are tied up by their legs, and then hung up on a cable. A big vault of water that has a current of electricity is waiting for their heads and necks. This is suppose to stun them, but not always. Then the belt or cable moves on, and people cuts their heads off. I also heard that some places will have workers kill the chickens by shoving a knife into the birds mouths, and puncturing the brain. This is suppose to loosen up the feather better.
Afterwards, the cleaned out body is washed in another vault. The guts will lots of time spill out the contents onto the meat, and the feces will end up in the vault water. This is why chicken meat has so many germs.
It is far kinder for you to kill you own chickens then to buy them from the stores. Did you ever notice that some store brought chickens have broken legs and bloody meat? This means that the legs were broken before the chickens died.
The day before you plan on killing your chickens, only give them water so the half digested grain won't get into the meat. I use to skin my chickens, but now I take my roosters to a livestock auction. You might want to pluck the birds, so make sure that you have very hot water to dip them in. Pull the flight feather out first, because they are the hardest to remove, especially when the feathers cool off.

1)Throw in into a pen of hungry pit bulls.
2)Run it over with the tractor.
3)Douse it with gasoline and light it.
4)Tie it to several hundred bottle rockets and light them.
5)Tie it to the back of your car, and go for a ride.
6)Test out your new golf club with its head.
7)Make big azz slingshot, shoot it in the air, and then shoot it with your shotgun! Beats the hell outta skeets.
8)Feed it an Alka-Seltzer.
9)Hook some jumper cables to it, and hook em up to the old ford.
10)Pee in its water bowl.
11)Pummel it with its own eggs. (hard boiled of course)
12)Throw rocks at it.
13)Drop an anvil on it.
14)Choke your own chicken.
15)Use it for a pinata.
16)Tie it in between two horses, and you know the rest. Anybody like leg quarters??
17)Feed it rock salt instead of corn.
18)Give it some pop rocks candy, and a coke.
19)Tie it to a kite, and fly it up about 300 ft, and then crash it to the ground.
20)Throw it into a lake, and see how well it doesn't swim.
YOU PICK THE BEST ONE.
Pillow case gave me an idea. Put the chicken in a pillow case, and have a pillow fight, OR bang the "pillow" against the wall. Least now you will have a feather filled pillow.

Either hold it and break it's neck or get another person to hold the chicken down on a chopping block while use either a Axe or a hatchet to chop it's head off. Then after wards let it run around with it's head cut off until stops moving.

Chopping the head off with a very very sharp axe or machette is the best way because it bleeds out the chicken.
Choking its neck is more work because you still have to cut the neck eventualy to get the blood out.

put the chicken in a pillow case or cloth bag with her head out the corner hole already made. Hold her head on chopping block and chop her head off then hang the body upsided down until the muscles stop spasming and clean as indicated.

Chop off the head.
It will run in circles spurting blood for about a minute. Ask any farmer.
