It is a wasteful activity. Men driving around and around a track for hours on end! I can barely afford gas to go to work and they are just wasting as much as they like! Average Americans are the fans of this type of event and they are the ones who should be most outraged!

I agree with all of you who believe that the amount that is wasted by NASCAR is only a drop in a bucket. I also agree that the SUVs and other huge gross gas guzzlers are more of a worry. But don't you fell that if we begin to be outraged at some of the smaller things that bother us it may begin to make a difference?

Here is a quote from Richard Childress :
NASCAR officials estimate their sport consumes about 6,000 gallons of specially refined racing fuel during a typical race weekend, including practice sessions, qualifying and the race. In Dover, gas averaged $2.83 a gallon Wednesday, meaning it would cost nearly $17,000 for the race weekend.
That is just in ONE race! And they are in bed with the oil company! Here is the link to read the complete artical. Be sure to note the section where in the past CONGRESS has identified the sport as waste of fuel!

The special racing fuel is 110 octane LEADED gas. Leaded as in containing LEAD, the same type of gas which was phased out in 1995. Leaded gas which releases 4 grams of lead into the air whe it is burned.

formula 1 is discussing a 'green' future post 2008 and using electric and environmentally fuels
personally i have wondered this since i went for an interview at a petrol tank factory and asked what they had planned for when petrol ran out and the manager interviewing me didnt have an answer
why are we 'wasting' the earths resources, in japans they have trains that are powered by electric magnets and its widely acepted that teh motorcar insustry and fuel lobby killed off battery powered cars in the 70s, governments have put a stop to methane and chip fat/cooking oil as fuel bcos its too hard to tax
i dont think it will hapen anytime soon in your country (usa) as the fuel lobby is too powerful

Because the President doesn't control the price of oil and gas traded on the open market. Infrastructure really isn't driving the price of gas. You want a reason for high gas prices ask OPEC, the massive growth in China and the 2nd and 3rd world growth reliant on it and commodities traders that fluctuate the price to meet their performance goals any given month. I'm not a great fan of the President, but you need to know what you are complaining about.

The sponsors and drivers are paying for the gas, not you! If they weren't buying it we would be paying for it some way or another, so banning it would be pointless! Did you ever stop to think how much fuel all sports use? How do you think baseball, basketball, football players get from state to state? How do you think bands travel from state to state, or even country to country? Walk? Magic? There is a lot more fuel used for more petty reasons than Nascar! You would see it that way not being a fan! How much fuel is used by the president everytime he travels? If it weren't for his election the prices may not be so high in the first place! So, you may want to reconsider where you are putting blame! We aren't even talking the same types of fuel here!

You would save far more fuel by banning the gas guzzling giants that most Americans drive. While you're at it why not ban private aviation. Then I guess you shoud also stop people flying to go on holiday...... holidays are a wasteful activity... and air liners consume far more fuel on one flight than a Nascar race does.
One final thought, what's price got to do with it ? I'm not going to get upset because somebody else lives in a bigger house or drives a more expensive car than I can afford. You should be more concerned about polluting the planet.

Great idea! We should ban all sports and close all theaters! Think of all the gas that we will save when all of the people who now go to the games and movies stay home!
Most NASCAR fans burn more gas getting to the event than a driver uses in the race.

This HAS to be one of the most ridiculous things I have seen on here! The racing gas used in NASCAR cant be used on the street because it is leaded gas and the high octane level would damage normal engines. The high gas prices are the OIL Companies fault because they are greedy!!!

Even better idea. Lets ban the War in Iraq, and all the United States Global Imperilalism. We waste more fuel in one second from using it to power our military as they stomp on foreign lands, then we do in a whole year of NASCAR driving.

The amount of gas burned by NASCAR is insignificant. Banning it would be pointless. In fact, if all the bubbas home watching NASCAR drove to the mall instead, it would burn WAY more gas than the race cars do.

Yes, lets boycott Nascar, who has nothing to do with regulating the price of gas, but some misdirected anger never hurt anyone (except the guy selling hot dogs at the race!).

Nascar is a waste of time to me. I think people have to be crazy to go around that track. They remind me of the hamster on the wheel. I have always said they all have a secret death wish to do something like that. Little boys are little boys forever.
Don't you think for one short minute they are going to give up anything. Those "good old boys" are going to race and the other "good old boys" are going to watch. The price of gas is the last thing on their minds. They don't care...........
