Have to dye the palms of my hands and finger tips red for a peformance. Has to be stable as am wearing a valuble antique silk costume to perform in. Henna isn't "red" enough. Theatric product used last time was a nightmare and ruined costume. Any suggestions? Can't source an option or find a none toxic vegetable option so far. Help!

I am doing a performance were I re-enact 16thC Hindu dance movements. The hands were dyed to make there movements more obvious and noticable to the eye. There is further Religious significance.

Guy's thanks for the advice but not much is actually working 100% to date.

1. Koolaid: I can't locate easily in Britain although I'm trying.

2.Tried Food Colouring: Too much glycerine in the formulae here - did nada 'cept get sticky!

3. Due to experiment soon but the colour isn't right - it's a bit "blue".

4. The stuff used on cuts was Mechurichrome, it's been discontinued because it's base is mercury and there were a lot of poisonings. (But it was the secret of performers before it was discontinued.)

5. The Sharpie - ace! Easy to use to paint my hands in my test-run. Looked stunning! Only draw back? It washed off and left almost no stain at all. If it's that soluble I risk the costume. Am experimenting with various vegetal hair-dye's at the moment.

Guys your answers are really helpful, thank you all so very much - Sadly, I've not found the perfect solution as yet. The beets did an amazing job from a stay-power perspective but the colour isn't right! If only I could modify the beets!!!

Mammer/Jammer (above) has a very good suggestion however here's mine.

OK so this is a totally long shot but there are these things you can get called "Discloser" tablets. They're meant to be put in your mouth and they then disolve and reveal the plaque.

Oral-B produce their own type of this and, although it's a purple pill (and doesn't taste disgusting at all), it shows up plaque as RED. Your then instructed to use water to wash away the 'fake' bits of stain and the real plaque will show up.

I think you'll understand where I'm going with this here but to get rid of the redness from your mouth you have to brush it away with a toothbrush.

As I've said, no promises at all but it might just work.

Good luck.

:-)

Use Floral spray paint. It is used for painting natural flowers. In may tend to crack but still effective on stage You can also try this: Brush a thin layer of liquid latex on the palm of your hand, as soon as it dries apply red creme color stick foundation, set with powder then brush another thin layer of liquid latex over it, this will avoid it from staining your costume. By the way , you might need someone to help you do this.

Buy fresh beets, only snip the top off & do not peel them.
Boil them whole in some water until the water turns red. Take off the stove & let cool to room temperature.
Take your bare hands & peel the beets & they will turn your hands bright RED. I usually wash them right away & it's hard to get off, I would suggest to let your hands "AIR DRY" just before you have to get into costume. They may stay red for a few days & will have to wash many times & wear off.

Feria Hair Dye, with the red additive. Just use the additive, I learned that the hard way. Very Very red.

Use beetroot. If you rub it on to your hands and fingertips or better still get somebody else to do it for you so they can put it exactly where you need it to be it will stain and it wont come off onto your costume.whalllllaa!

Can you wear flesh coloured gloves and just dye the bits you need dyed? That way you don't have to worry about the effect on your skin. Other than that, I have no idea. Sorry.

Why dont you committ a crime that you will get caught doing? Then you can be caught RED-HANDED! Sorry, couldnt help myself, I dont really know for sure, but what about that red stuff that they used to always put on grazed knees? Not sure what it was called.
