People have diverse interests. It's like a musician asking, how come not more people play instruments or sing, or a writer asking how come not everyone read more books and literature instead of watching TV.
Different people have different aptitudes, strengths, upbringing, education, so different passions, hobbies, and interests.
I look into my telescope and I see Jupiter's Red Spot and a few of its satellites and I'm in total awe, and as much as I show it to my wife, she just can't get into it. Then again, I don't share her passion in art, and arts and crafts.
Different strokes for different folks...but don't let that stop you from trying to convert a few along the way ... : )

I am interested in astronomy and space explorations. I think it's really cool knowing what's really there, if they really exist or not. And just the fact that we're in space is interesting enough, how things came to be - the stars, planets, cosmos, etc. Astronomy and space explorations can also be the source of our questions regarding outside world.

I am so into it sometimes I can't sleep at night my brain just races with possibilities. I love astronomy and anything to do with the Cosmos. Carl Sagan, Einstien, Hawking, Galileo and Newton are my hereos. I wish I was so much better at math so I could understand it all. I have downloaded hundreds of pictures from the Hubble scope and Chandra.
Sometimes I can stare at one picture of a galaxy for hours. It calms me. I believe the answers to EVERYTHING lies out there in the ebon vault we call the universe. Sorry...you hit a nerve.

Look out there pal, except for us there's nothing but large chunks of gravel and gas.We were put just in the right spot.A little further out we'd freeze,a little closer we'd be Barb- qued.Until you find that right combo, don't expect to find another race.Have there been other races? The juries still out on that one.Research Dr. Richard C. Hoagland for info.
We've seen our planets ain't nuthin'doin out there except some gas and methene, hell I got that after a good carne asada burrito!

I dont think its just about sex. It sells but it wont make a ship go warp speed. I love space exploration. I think were near to finding a planet like ours soon. We just need a genius to come up with warp and find worm holes in a spaceship. Anyways...people are just interested in what directly affects them. Until space does things wont change.

Two things spring to mind. One is the math may be too difficult and the other is the concepts of space, time and distances may just be too far reaching for some otherwise intelligent people to grasp.

I think so, good question.
I think most people have a set belief that astronomy and space exploration are sci-fi farfetched concepts and don't bother to think much of it?
Or maybe we undervalue our species so much that we don't think we are capable of significant space exploration.
Also, I think most people feel familiar with culture from earth and whatever terrestrial limits they know of, because it keeps them "safe" somehow.

I am interested in that. I am majoring in astronomy. But, people aren't interested because they are too stuck on unimportant things like clothes and parties and stuff. Open your mind people!

because it's vastly complex, sometimes even intimidatingly complex to people. it baffles them and sometimes even frightens them, because it's something most people just can't comprehend. people like to feel like they're on top of everything, like they know everything and can explain it all. once they reach something that they have trouble understanding, they insult it or ignore it.
aside from that, i think it also has to do with religion, and the fact that most people of faith deny that space is really there, or that the information provided by science about the cosmos is blasphemous or wrong. religion is something easy for people to follow because it's simple fantasy, but when they're face to face with the truth, they like to hide from it.
