If your in-laws were after it, what about your partner? They may have been as well. That is an odd situation though. It makes me think of an episode of a TV show, the couple were getting married and the girls father kept asking the grooms parents to pay for things since they were more well off.

If you're still reconsidering things with your now-ex, I would bring up the aspect that you don't feel comfortable with your in-laws and feel you need some space from them.
