The best help you can get would be through the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, but I would have to know more about the merits of the issue, his and yours to know if you had a case. You can sue for anything, you can sue you mother if you do not like the shape of your belly button if you want. This is one of the problems of the American legal system, in other countries (Great Britain I believe) looser pays all or at least some part of all, cuts down on senseless cases.
So the answer is yes, but merits of the case have to be worth the results. The only real result would be to get your job back and do you really want to work for someone who you dislike this much? Wait until the action is taken and then see what your options are.

You can be fired for any outrage against a superior or co-worker.
Name calling has become an epitome for firings, lawsuits and other horrendous things.
People have gotten so used to the idea "I can fire, I can sue, I can try to exploit the system to get rich and send this other person to Hell because I have the right to do so!!
I feel for you and I am sorry it is going the way it is.

Some people need to be yelled at and called names to get their attention. If you do it, you will get fired or sued.

Take this to heart. Do you remember the movie "Sixth Sense"?
If so, change the quote to

"I see stupid people, they are everywhere! They do not even know they are STUPID".

If you are fired say that to the idiot!

I hope that makes you feel a little better!

Well, in this country you can try to sue anyone for anything. Maybe you could get on one of those judge shows; that would be a win-win situation for both you and your boss since the show would pay both of you!
Other than that, you could call Bill Handel on the law and ask him if you've got a case since he tells it like it is!
Of course, you could also just suck it up, tell your boss that you temporarily lost your mind, and apoligize. It is up to you!

If you used that word in the workplace, yes. If you live in a state like New York, they don't NEED a reasons to fire you.

If you have a union or work in a state that has worker's rights laws, then you can try - but is it worth it?

Basically your boss can fire you for any reason. Of course if you are a member of a union then you can maybe fight to get your job back like one of my co-workers did.

He can fire you for that most likely and I doubt that you would win if you sued if he was in his legal right to fire you. Don't tick off the boss.

You should ask, will I win because you can always sue.

He can fire you or just let you go. You don't have a right to work there, it is at-will employment. Your job lasts as long as you are willing to work there and as long as they are willing to pay you.

I imagine you didn't call him name just for fun. You were probably raged. You probably have your reasons to be raged. However, namecalling only got you in trouble.

It might be much better to approach him and apologize for calling him a name. Easier and simpler than sueing.

That is a good reason to fire you, and no, you cannot sue.
