well as a distance runner myself, the best way to keep from getting a side stitch would be to stretch out you abs just by doing some simple twists and stuff like that. During your run if you start to get a side stitch just start taking deep breaths. The stitch will go away in about a minute or so, but do not stop taking the deep breaths. continue them for about another minute or the stitch will come back. Also i have found that the better in shape you are, your less likely to get stitches as frequently.

I used to get that so now I don't run anymore. Try not eating or drinking anything at least an hour before you run. Practice breathing in and out slowly not in a panting way and make sure you stretch a lot before. Good luck!

Your breathing has a LOT to do about side stiches. Everyone says that you should breath in through your nose and out your mouth but that doesn't work for some people. Stretching, breathing, and warming up will help you with this kind of pain.

It might be too darn hot to run. Make more frequent stops and bring a water bottle with you to cool off during the stops. Also consider running a shorter distance on days that are too hot.

Hi
It sounds like a side stitch caused by your breathing rhythm. It has to be easy, not to hard and not to light. Like run two steps breath gently, run to steps breath gently or maybe take 3 strides then breath and so on till you get the one that words for you...if your rhythm is off bingo you get a side stitch...sometimes this will happen when you dance too...

Do they hurt while running or after? It could be so many things but you should be careful so you don't get injured. If it hurts a bit after running, it might be muscle ache and that you have to consider to be normal in order to build up your muscles. I would suggest that you speak to another runner and describe what you experience.

Breath sorta like Pregnant people do while in Labor. Sortain through the nose and out through the mouth.

Never Eat before running...it does not help AT ALL!

maybe you're over doing it? start small and work up to running the distance you want.

Make sure you have something to eat before you run (obviosly not straight before) don't run on an empty stomach and drink loads of water.

The reason your side starts hurting is because your body isn't getting enough oxygen. Try and regulate your breathing, and perhaps you're pushing yourself a little too hard. The more you do it, the better your respiratory system will get at keeping your oxygen flowing.
