LOL...Yes, it is very hard to find the right computer. It really depends on what you want to use the computer for. The Dual Core processors are great and very fast. I would suggest getting a laptop with a dual core processor in it. If you want to laptop to work, then forget about getting a PC. Get a MacBook. They have the speed, durability, and you can even run Windows XP on them. In tests, Windows XP has performed faster on a MacBook than it has on regular PC hardware, which is actually kind of funny. If you want speed, durability, and dependibilty, the MacBook is definately for you! Now that Macs can run Windows, you can have all of the Windows applications you want on your Mac. You get the BEST of both worlds, not that Windows XP really has anything to offer...lol. Good luck to you and make the right purchasing decision. Get a Mac. The tech support is great, and I have NEVER had a virus on my Mac before. I don't even have virus protection! (However, you do need to get virus protection if you want to install XP on it as well and install it on the PC side) Email me if you have any questions about the MacBook or the other PC laptops you were interested in. I will be glad to help you!

OK, if you were a hardcore gamer, you wouldn't be asking this, so I guess your not. GOOD! Makes it easy.

If you were hardcore "Apple Computer" type, youwouldn'tbe asking this. GOOD!

Stop worrying about the processor - it's of no consequence to you. Really. What you really want is to make sure it is:

1. A good, reliable machine
2. Equipped the way you want. (WiFi; DVD Burner, etc.)

I'd call Gateway - I've had several brands of laptops - this has been the best experience. They'll help you pick one out.

Here's the reason. In the first 6 months, I had to call Gateway support 3 times - all stupid questions. THe LONGEST I was ever on hold with support was 18 SECONDS! Less than a third of a minute!

Remember, it's difficult to find a computer made by a reputable company that WON'T work for you - go for ease of purchase (Gateway on the 'phone) and reliability.

To tell you the truth, all brands are the same except for what they give you for your money. Accept Mac, which is crap. They cant do anything. almost no programs or games are compatible.
As far as I know, ACER is the best laptop for your money.
I got an acer with a core duo, 1gb ram, 120gb hard drive, dvd writer, camera, multicard reader, x1600 grahics card(very valuable, almost impossible to find) and a high definition sound card.
I tried to find a better deal, but HP, Dell, Alienware, Toshiba, Lenova, and asus were almost double the price.
I paid $1100, and The alienware equivalent is more than $3000, the dell equivlaent is $2200 and HP doesnt even make something like this but charges more anyway.

Here is my laptop, its called the Acer Aspire 5670wlmi, and its fantastic.

If you want a very high performance one(though expensive), go with a alienware or Dell XPS.
If you want a budget one, go with the Dell B130 or Lenovo 3000 C series, and upgrade the memory and processor some.
For a mid range one, try a Sony Vaio or an HP.
AMD's are good if you get a Turion processor, but don't go for a Sempron.
For intel's, don't get a Celeron they are quite frankly crap. Core duos are new and probably good.

AMD, Sempron and Pentium is the brand of the processor. I personally like Pentium because I'm used to it.

If you like crap, buy HP! lol
But seriously NEC or Vaio will be the only 2 brands I would consider to purchase. But you are the boss those.. so, go with your feeling!

P/S : how come you did not indicate Fujitsu?! it's my favourite brand!

I love Dell!!! Dell is great!!! They are easy to use and easy to replace parts and fix. They are very inexpensive and you can buy them online, through their catalog, at a kiosk at the mall etc... I would definatley recommend them. I have a Dell Laptop and have had no trouble with it at all. I can use different components to put into my computer. You don't have to have dell parts to add memory and stuff like that. Sony is like buying a brand name computer. Dell has low end models to top end models. The Marines use Dell computers so you know they are good! I have a Intel Pentium Processor and it's just fine!! Only buy Apple if you just plan on using it for graphics... Not good for business use or spreadsheets and such! Build your own computer on dell.com for easy use! You can make it as beefed up as you want it!

5years ago I bought a Toshiba product for my mom. I just set it up, loaded all the updates and let her go with it. Since then it hasn't frozen, crashed, or failed mechanically. All manufacturers have cheap junk and high-end bullet proof stuff. Wich ever brand you choose, buy the high-end model. The newest with the most. In the world of laptops you truly do get what you pay for.

All the computer fanatics I know say to get Toshiba and that they are really good. They also are easier to upgrade if you have to than hp, dell, and some of those other ones. I listened and got a Toshiba laptop from best buy and I love it.

Just call Dell, and get one personally made just for you. It takes all the work out of trying to compare and find other laptops. They can explain to you the differences of some of your questions and definetly find one that fits your style. I got the inspiroon 1000 and its pretty basic for me, a student, and was only 400 bucks.
