Starship Troopers, Stranger in a Strange Land by Heinlein; Ender's Game, Speaker for the Dead and Xenocide by Card; The Alchemist and Warrior of the Light by Coelho; Timeline, Sphere and Eaters of the Dead by Crichton; This Present Darkness and Piercing the Darkness by Peretti; Da Vinci Code by Brown would all be good places to start :)

Well, since you don't believe in God, I can't imagine you're going to take the advice of those advocating you read the Bible. However, it wouldn't hurt to explore other beliefs and the Bible might expose you to ideas you're not familiar with. I don't believe in God either but that hasn't stopped me from reading the Bible or the Qur'an. Heck, you might want read the Satanic Bible (I haven't read that...yet). I'm reading "1776" by David McCullough right now. I've been meaning to read it for some time and I finally started Monday. I'm also reading a lot of children's books, as I'm a volunteer reader. You may want to revisit some of the books you read when you were younger. You really should spend some time at the library and glance at a few books. Maybe something will interest you. Don't hesitate to ask the librarians for some recommendations. Finally, check out the links below. You'll find lists of what is popular now and what has been popular over time. If you can't find anything interesting among the titles there, I can't help you. Oh, since you like manga, you should look for books about Inuyasha, etc. at the library.

It depends on what you like to read. I really like "Bridges of Madison County" by Robert James Waller, "Tuesdays with Morrie" by Mitch Albom, "The Outlander" by Diana Gabeldon, "In this Sign" by Joanne Greenberg, any of the "Harry Potter" Books, any books by Patricia Cornwell, "The Far Euphrates" by Aryeh Lev Stollman, and "The Book of the Dun Cow" by Walter Wangerin Jr.
A good place to look for books is the NY Times best seller list, but don't let that be your final place to took for reading material. Their are so many good books that are not on that list. Some other places to get ideas for a good book are:

Happy Reading!!

Start by deciding what you are currently in the mood to read - action adventure, crime drama, romance, sci fi?
If you are lost still because you can't decide, take your butt down to the library and start browsing the shelves and checking the book cover to find out what the book is about. If the book sounds interesting to you, pick it up.
Once you have five or so books, stop looking and go check out.
Repeat process when you are finished reading those books and ready for more.

Try some of the books by Dorothy Sayers. Also Agatha Cristie. I have also been reading Lillian Jackson Braun's "Cat Who" books and there is a new series by Alexander Smith about the "Number One Ladie's Detective Agency" that is really good.
