Yes. The event took place over Johnston Island in the Pacific in a project called Starfish Prime. It was launched aboard an Atlas missile and detonated in space. In subequent years the island has been used as a storage and disposal depot for chemical weapons that were being destroyed.
p.s. When this happened, they also discovered the electromagnetic pulse that goes along with a nuclear explosion. A phenomena that fries transistors and other solid state electronic parts.
