In Virtual Villagers how do I get my farmer to start a new garden? Only on level 1 still....?

I'm almost out of food and when I try to get my farmer to dig in the rich soil by the huts I'm told that "additional research is necessary". ????

You need to get to level 2 of farming so save some tech points and buy the level 2 of farming. Once you have it, you can drop one of your Farmers on the field area and they will start to plant crops, and then also water the crops using the well water. It takes a bit of time to get a crop to grow, but once it does, you can then get your villagers to harvest it.
