You haven't given enough info.
What kind of tank?salt, fresh, aerated?
Size of tank?
What kind of fish?
What kind of algae? green, red, stringy?
Where is the algae? floating, on glass, surface?
If it's just green, on the glass ,a fresh water 10 gallon tank & airated, get an algea eater fish.
Some times adjusting the light exposure helps.Nothing drastic- don't shock your fish.
If it's in a sunny place, block the sunlight- if it's not getting any light , try adding some- sunlight or a full spectrume light.

If you have a good filtration system, you can get one of those little magnetized cleaner things that attaches on both sides of the walls of the aquarium and squeegees off the algae. Or just put an algae cleaning sponge thing against the wall and then scrub it around with a tool of some kind, like maybe one of those net fish dipper things or a chopstick. Or get a fish/snail that eats algae.

Is it a salt water tank or tropical planted tank. If its planted tank then there are different kind of algaes as well and different fishes to treat them. The most popular ones are otocinclus, SAE, Plecos. The best workers and the ugliest ones are CAE Chinese algae eaters. They do the job very quickly and cleanly but once they grow big they might attack your other fishes and look ugly...hope this helps....SuNnY !

you could get an algae eater. they are fish that will eat the algae. If you get one and plan on keeping it though you should get some pellets to feed it also because hopefully there is not enough algae for it to live off of alone. They are really cool fish, they have them cleaning the tanks at the pet stores.

Take a flat razor and slide it down the sides of the glass then buy a pleco and he'll keep your tank clean by eating the algae but make sure you have algae or he'll starve to death.

DO NOT USE ANY CHEMICALS that say they kill algae. Most people here have suggested a pleco, that is a good idea. I myself don't like plecos because they look like they are stuck in evolution like half fish/half lizard. I opt for snails they are not as scary and generally do not eat the food that you provide for your fish like plecos do.
