If you have really bad service you should leave $0.25 so the server will not think you just forgot to tip(which I have done only once in my 29 years), you should only do this for really bad service which the server is responsible for not for stuff that they have no control over e.g. the kitchen is slow because they are short staffed or really busy, bad tasting food, etc. Remember servers only get paid 2.15 an hour (and that goes to Uncle Sam)and make there living on tips. So unless they are the cause of the problem always tip at least 20%.

On a few occasions, yes. Instead of leaving nothing, however, it is better to leave a penny because that let's the server know that you didn't just forget but you truly thought the service was bad.

I always leave something. If the service is terrible, I want the server to know, and not think that I forgot the tip, so leave a nickel or something. Just don't penalize the server if the real problem is food or the time it took to get it.

Yes, I've been so frustrated I just walked out after paying for the food only and I've also left a penny to show bad service

Yes. My belief is "no service, no tip".

I'm also from the school of thought that believes that the size of the tip should be based on the size and quality of the service.

if the service is bad the tip is optional if the food is bad thats the cooks fault and they are two different issues I've been both and owned rest.'s too I do not even think twice about not tipping poor service

Yes, you just leave a few pennies or change for them. They get the hint really fast, but make sure you aren't going to come back and risk getting the same waiter...you food could turn out "seasoned" if you know what I mean. Ever see the movie "Waiting?"

I leave a nickle when the service is really bad. I once had a horrible waitress at Buffalo Wild Wings.

I have had really bad service, but instead of no tip, you leave a penny so that they get the message.
