You can't, but I've got the next best thing. Go to allofmp3.com. You can download songs for about 20 cents each, depending on how good of quality you want it. It's a pre-paid thing so you have to pay first, but the minimum amount is $10. You can get a lot of music for $10. You can use a credit card and it's TOTALLY legal.
There's also another site called gomusic.com. Same basic deal, but the minimum you have to pay is $30. A little pricier and a bit harder to navigate, but I use that site, too.
Hope this helps, and enjoy :)

It depends on what country you live in as copyright laws vary. In the States I think it is illegal, but not yet so in Canada (but it's coming.) I download my music from HTTP:\\www.limewire.com. The great thing about it is not just that it's free, but the selection, depending on how far you may want to go back, is fantastic. The quality is superb, although you may want to rip some tracks down to size to fit more on a portable mp3 player. Try finding 'Bits & Pieces' by the Dave Clark Five, who I saw during the British Invasion when I was in grade 4/5 from iTunes! Good luck.

Not gonna happen. Just be a pirate. Yo ho, yo ho a pirates life for me. Yarr, more wine winch. lol
There are a lot of websites that claim that they have free legal music downloads. If you don't pay then it is pirating. Beware using certain programs for free downloads. A lot of them are loaded up with spyware. Stay away from Kazaa. They are the worst for loading spyware on your computer. The safest program that I know of is Limewire.

you can not download and keep music for free. you can listen to legal on line radio stations, or pay 1p per play to listen to a song. but downloading legally to keep for free is not possible.
so either pay the going rate and buy the songs you like and want to keep or just listen to Internet radio such as the radio offered by yahoo.com you can customize this with your own preferred music genre.
just my opinion.
although i have not tried it the site kazzaa or how ever it is spelled has gone legal as of July 2006 so you could try them. but the choice is yours.
buy from a legal source like itune or a retail outlet like HMV or one of the reputable companies out there, or go the illegal route such as file share by limewire or bearshare to name but two systems.

Some soda bottles have free download codes in them. (Pepsi used to--they may still, but I'm not sure.) You can save the caps to get free downloads.

The corporations are the pirates. They rip off you by charging hefty prices and then don't pay the artists unless you are their top 5 revenue bringers..
