I have read with interest all the answers given, and not one said anything about the method of application. Use a radiator roller fitted with a SPONGE-TYPE roller obtainable from B&Q or good hardware store. I painted a fridge for a customer, and a friend thought it had been sprayed professionally. The rollers are about the size of those pads that woman use each month,(Tampax) I get the impression that a lot of the answers are from persons in USA. We in UK may not always have the brands that you mentioned. I think that your latex paints are equal to our emulsion paints, However DONT use them on your bath.

Prime any bare metal with metal primer.Other than that, providing the surface is dust/grease free, ordinary oil based household paint, both undercoat and gloss on the outside of cast iron baths is ok in my opinion. I have known these paints used, and no problems. Deep blue with gold claw feet looked good. If it'll stay on oil tanks, metal machinery etc, exposed to the elements outside, it'll stay on the outside of a bath. But either way, you need no rust, corrosion or dirt underneath when it's applied.

Several choices:
Klenck's epoxy inside, Rustoleum outside.
Sledge hammer and buy a Kohler Vintage soaking tub.
or,
Redo the whole bath it's soooooo freakin' old anyway.

You should use oil paint, and not latex. If you have sanded so much that there is metal showing through, you should probably use a can of primer spray paint specifically for metal (rustoleum).

I would really get a pro to do it and I don't think they are TOO expensive. You don't want to ruin that great bath. Since you already prepped it they might give you a break on the price as well.
