The Greenwich Mean Time is also used by all military communications the world over. A date-time group commonly found on a military message would be:
031900Z AUG 06. The letter Z for Zulu represents GMT in England. There are 25 other time zones in the world such as A for Germany, R for the eastern seaboard of the States, S for Central States, etc.
I've forgotten more than I can recall.

It has what used to be the premier observatory in the world and ,when the lines of longitude were being delineated so that mariners would know their position at sea, the line running from the north pole to the south pole through Greenwich was chosen as zero degrees. To compare local times throughout the world this line was also used as starting point

When the determination of longitude was being defined, each country wanted it's own capital defined as zero degrees longitude. Greenwich was the site of the conference and became a place that all could agree on as the prime meridian. Hence it was designated as the prime meridian
