Davey Jones is an imaginary figure, created by the Sailors of yore. And it is said that he actually had two lockers.

The first Davey Jones Locker, is an idiom for the bottom of the sea. It became a common nautical term amongst the drunk sailors in the 17th century. A scare tactic of sorts, if you will, for the new rookies at sea. They would say stuff like, "Don't misbehave, or your will piss off the god Neptune, and end up in the locker of Davey Jones!" And these sailors love to use colorful words to describe even the simplest things (For example, why can't they call the right side of the ship, RIGHT, you know! But oh no, they have to be difficult and go, "Starboard"). It makes their boring life at sea a little more fun, I suppose. Anyway, these bored sailors started describing, "dying at sea" with "to Davey Jones locker," instead. Going to the bottom of the sea, another word. And the legend would continues, "if you go to Davey Jones locker, you never come back out." Well that's obvious, isn't it? I mean who the hell ever comes back out from the bottom of the sea anyway, right?

A similar legend surrounds the other DAVEY JONES LOCKER, a famous seafood restaurant on Waikiki beach, in Honolulu, Hawaii. Their legend has a similar lethal ending. It goes like this, "If you complain too much about the service, it will piss off the waitresses, and they will go and tell the chef, and before you know it, your food will be poisoned and you will die right there. And because they do not want any negative publicity, you will end up in their frigging locker."

The point is, you never know with these drunken sailors and their fantasies.

Its amazing how these rumors get started, you know.

Davey Jones....hah!

I know that expression about Davey Jones' locker. I have wondered the same thing before, but I don't know for sure where the story came from. You're not an idiot at all. It's a really good question, and I'm sure one of the smart people will be able to give you the info you want. Good luck!

There are many different theories as to how the legend of Davy Jones came about. Most accounts define Davy jones as being, essentially, the Devil. The exact origin of "Davy Jones" is unclear, and many explanations have been proposed. David Jones was a pirate on the Indian Ocean in the 1630s, but most scholars agree that he was not famous enough to gain such lasting global fame. Sources have cited the British pub owner who is referenced in the 1594 song "Jones's Ale is Newe." He may be the same pub owner who supposedly threw drunken sailors into his ale locker and then dumped them onto any passing ship. He could also be Duffer Jones, a notoriously myopic sailor who often found himself overboard.
Others have suggested more supernatural meanings. Some believe the name came from Welsh sailors who would call upon Saint David for protection in times of mortal danger. Some also think it is just another name for the devil. Some call him Deva, Davy or Taffy, the thief of the evil spirit. Some think Jonah became the "evil angel" of all sailors. Upon death, a Christian sailor's body supposedly went to Davy Jones's locker, but a holy sailor soul went to Fiddler's Green.
So, the short answer to your question, "Was he a real person?" is "maybe."
Hope that helped.

Davy Jones' Locker is an idiom for the bottom of the sea — the resting place of drowned seamen. It is used as a euphemism for death at sea (e.g. to be "sent to Davy Jones' Locker")[1]; Davy Jones is a nickname (used primarily by sailors) for what would be the devil of the seas. His origins are unclear, and many theories have been put forth, including incompetent sailors, a pub owner who kidnapped sailors, or that Davy Jones is another name for the devil.
The story's reputation has been widespread among sailors since its popularization, and nautical traditions have been created around him. He is also very popular in the broader culture, with references to him in various forms of media, most recently in his depiction in the 2006 movie Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.

Unfortunatly, the story itself is old and sailors aren't best known for their exacting transcriptions of their own particular mythology. So the short answer is that no one really knows.

There are various theories, though:
One is that the name is taken from the name of a particular British pub owner who used to wait until a sailor was drunk, throw him in his ale locker, and then dump him on the nearest passing ship;
Another is that he is named after a particularly short-sighted sailor, who almost always found himself falling over-board;
Yet another is that the name comes from Saint David, patron saint of Wales, whom the Welsh sailors would call on in times of need;
And yet another is that it is simply another name for the devil.

At some point, the belief started among Christian sailors that their bodies would go to Davy Jones locker, and their holy souls to Fiddler's Green.

Chances are that it started out at some small seed, and was passed around, growing and mutating as it went. Myths tend to do that.
