"Festina lente" is a Latin expression meaning "Hurry slowly". It was initially intended to prevent people from going into action too fast and without thinking too much.

"Festina Lente" literally means "Make haste slowly," and was the first emperor Augustus' personal saying, one which is now credited to his invention. It was something of a personal philosophy for the emperor, who employed it in his political and military dealings, preferring to make his way slowly into each successive province nearby until he had conquered the world, in contrast to his adoptive father (Caesar) or Alexander the Great, both of whom engaged in a more blitzkrieg style of warfare.
