Mandy, no this question isn't for me or my child. It's a friend and she's about 23 and I guess they just detected it or something- she just had surgery a couple of weeks ago.

It means exactly what it says and in many infants they wait until the child is about a year old to determine if surgery is necessary as some simply grow out of the condition( it mends itself) and some require.heart surgery. Usually with this there is some of the non-oxygenated blood mixing with the newly oxygenated blood returning from the lungs and getting pumped to the rest of the body. These babies or children are often smaller, and ,my niece had this.. they have a kind of spider monkey look to their faces because their eyes are larger looking in appearance due to their lack of "baby fat" and their stressed cardiovascular state. It is not unusual to detect this at birth. This condition varies in degree from very serious requiring surgery to correcting itself in time. I must add she is very beautiful, and sorry about the spider monkey description but if you recognise this it is easy to spot.

There are several kinds of "holes in the heart" Two of the most common are congenital

There are naturally "holes" in the heart when you are in the womb and using mothers blood for oxygen so the blood bypasses your lungs....once you are born and start breathing, the holes quickly close so blood can be re-routed to the lungs. These sometimes fail to close completely. ASD (Atrial Septal Defect) or VSD (Ventricluar Septal Defect) They often will close eventually, sometimes on their own, sometimes after a medication, though sometimes surgery is needed. These 2 types often have few symptoms and may be detected in routine heart exams in adults.

There are several other kinds as well, but they are rarer, and cause more severe symptoms detected at birth.

There is a hole in the heart. Normally it is detected at an early age but not always. It's not always fatal. If the person is careful then the person will be just fine.

It literally means that there is a hole in the heart.
Usually congenital, most are detected at an early age if they are symptomatic. Some reverse by themselves. Some have to be closed by medication. Some have to be closed with surgery.
Yes they can be fatal if they are not found and treated.

I am 24 years old and I have VSD and mitro-valve and was born with both! My hole is in the left chamber and I got to quit all meds, except for a strong antibodic when going to a dentist or having surgery. I have no limitations, though a few scares in my life. But all is well I go to the cardiologist every year now. And when I go they do a EKG and Echo-cardiogram (ultra-sound of the heart), and sometimes a chest x-ray.
Are you aking this question for yourself or your child?

VSD. Ventrical septical defect. Hole in the heart. It can and can not be a problem. You will need a EKG, catherization to determine the extent. Surgery is often recommended. Not always necessary. See a cardiologist.
