The first capital of the United States was New York City. The capital moved to Washington DC due to Alexander Hamilton. The US had been put into debt because of the Revolution and Hsmilton believed that they needed to repay their bonds in full. The south had paid their state debts but did not want to pay into the National debt that Hamilton was trying to eliminate. So Hamilton offered to persuade his northern allies to move the capital to MD if Southerners supported his plan

I believe it was New York City. It was moved to Washington so it would be more centralized (we just had the East Coast at that point).
