tetracycline or oxytetracycline, depending where you live, in wisconsin, minnesota, and illinois there is a fleet farm and they sell anitibotics like oxytetracycline (teramycine, oxytet 100 and 200, even tylosine) on the shelf without a perscription, farmers but it all the time.

Baytril and Tylan are only available by prescription. Doxy and Tetracycline can be purchased over the counter as bird and fish meds. However, I don't think it's a good idea to dose them yourself, the dosage for rats is very small, and the over the counter meds are in much large dosages than would be acceptable for a rat. Plus by treating it yourself you risk using too high or too low a dosage and either harming your rat, or creating antibiotic resistant bacteria. It really is best to just take them to the vet! Ask your vet, perhaps they'd be willing to set up a payment plan for you, or you could get a vet credit card (CareCredit I believe) so you can pay in smaller amounts. You should always have an emergency fund set aside for vet care like this. If you can't afford vet care for a sick animal then you really shouldn't have the animal.
