Everytime I try to open the word document there is popup message says "The file is being used by another user, do you want to make a copy?" I use my personal PC, there is no way to share the file with another user. How can I get rid of this message when I open the doc file?

I'm assuming you aren't on a network, and someone else IS using it.

You might try checking its Document Properties to see if it's locked. If so, unlock it.

Or

Go ahead and make a copy, then off the original.

Computers ARE frustrating little critters, aren't they?

How are you trying to open a document?

clk on File / Open and try it that way.
or you could try dbl clking on the file itself.
If this doesn't solve the problem I'd take Word out of the All Users Desktop and Start Up folder. Just delete them.
In Windows Explorer: clk +sign of My Computer / +sign of C:\ - +sign of Documents and Settings / + sign of All Users / clk on Desktop folder and delete Word. Clk on Startup folder and delete Word. (these are only shortcuts and do not delete the program)

In your file structure, see if you have a file with the same name but a .lck extension instead of a .doc. If you do, delete the one with the .lck extenstion. If you can't find a file like that, try restarting your computer, then open the document.

open as read only then save as a different file name. Delete the old file, rename the new file with the old name.

Press CTRL+ALT+DEL, open Task Manager, go to Processes tab, look for anything that says WINWORD.exe, select them and end the process. Once you have closed all of them try opening your file.
