I've heard more than once that Notre Dame's football team is predominantly non-Catholic. I know it's just hearsay, but it still surprises me given the Notre Dame is THE Catholic university The student body is about 85% Catholic, and there's a longstanding tradtion of pre-game prayer which ends in "Our Lady of Victory, Pray for Us!" Does anyone have any statistical evidence of how Catholic the football team is?

no specific statistics, but given today's college landscape, it doesn't surprise me that the majority may not be Catholic. Once college football became the money maker it is and some programs grew with the prestige, they went for the best player regardless of religion. However, the players that attend know the traditions and adhere to the principles of Notre Dame.

Another example is BYU. BYU is over 95% Latter Day Saints, yet 90% of the football team is not. However, they are still required to adhere to the teachings of the church.

i agree completely. Notre Dame is the irish catholic school and will be that way forever. I feel it should be at least 60% Irish Catholic, but lets face it, college football has started to become more about wins than school pride or traditional pride.

i go to notre dame every year to watch football games. i hope to someday attend notre dame. i personally dont care what percentage is catholic. when the students enter the school they are aware of the religious beliefs of the school and are obviously not bothered by it or else they wouldnt attend.
after a certain time, notre dame started accepting other religions into their school. and with all the talent they have the team, they are not just going to limit the students by their religions.

i think we should care less about how the team practices their faiths and more about how they play this upcoming season.

God NEVER guaranteed success for football teams simply by virtue of the fact they hail from Catholic schools!

I've been surfing the web more than two hours today seeking the answer to the same question, but I haven't found a more interesting debate like this. it is pretty worth enough for me.

So Catholic that they practice the "Priest and the Fetching Altar Boy" routine in the locker room before every game...
