It definitely depends on your location in America. Different banks have more or less presence in certain areas of the country... mainly from acquisitions (buying smaller bank chains and changing the name to its own.) Just look around your area or look online at some of the larger banks that will most likely have brick/mortar locations: such as the banks described above (HSBC, Wells Fargo, Wachovia, etc.)

I personally bank online so that I receive the highest/best yields on savings and other investment instruments; but your needs are probably different from my own.

Try an online bank such as ING. Otherwise, unless you are compelled to visit a real branch, you can select from many banks. I have lived in several regions of the US, and I have done business through banks sometimes based thousands of miles away. A checkbook and a debit or credit card go a long way to extending your bank's accessibility.

Bank of America is in most states as is Wells Fargo and several others.
