it's up to you dad. is she a pretty good kid most of the time? does she really, really, really want it done and would you be the coolest dad ever if you let her? :P (yes, i wanted my nose pierced when i was too young to get it done. my mom asked me to wait a few years. i did.. and on my birthday i got two holes in my nose! they've since grown up and you can't even tell they were there.)

in my experience.. i've know plenty of people who've gotten it done and it really wasn't a big deal at all. but hey.. if you do let her get it.. make sure she keeps it clean until it heals!

and extra cool points for dad: if you let her.. take her to a tattoo studio to get it done. it hurts more but the holes made by needles are actually a lot cleaner (and heal nicer when you no longer want the piercing!) than the ones made by the guns used in malls and salons.

Tell her to stick it out til she is 14. The only place that will pierce the cartilage on so young a minor is a mall piercing place like Claires or piercing pagoda. They use stud guns which are extremely dangerous...especially on cartilage. They cause blunt force trauma on the skin, have been known to shatter and permanately deform or collapse cartilage and also carry disease since you cannot sterilize plastic, only wipe the surface iwth alcohol.

A professional body piercer (who is more appropriate to pierce anything, especially something as high risk as cartilage) usually will not perform a cartilage piercing on anyone under age 14. This is sometimes a state regulation and sometimes a moral judgement by the piercer. Minors still have a lot of growing to do at only 12 years old and your cartilage can grow with you, leaving the piercing misplaced, crooked or cause migration.

A needle piercing involves a tribevel, single-use, sterile needle, implant grade stainless steel or titanium ring or stud and training in cross contamination and blood borne pathogens...not practicing on a teddy bear like Claires girls. These leave a clean cut which heals better and faster.

Keep in mind too that cartilage takes anywhere from 6 months to over a year to fully heal and can become irritated, swollen, sore or any number of those at any time during or after the healing. It also needs to be cleaned daily...not with alcohol, peroxide, neosporin or anything else that strictly says "not intended for deep or puncture wounds." Provon soap, Satin soap or sea salt soaks are appropriate cleaners.

Also find out the regulations in her school. Over the last couple of years many schools have banned the wearing of earrings in any form during P.E. class or other physical activity.

Tribalectic.com is also a great resource.

I'm assuming you mean the cartilage in her ear. In that case, you could have it done at any boutique at your local mall, with mixed results. I used to work at one. When you pierce cartilage with a gun (unlike a lobe) the tissue is forced to move when pierced. In other words, it could cause unsightly bumps on the ear and easily gets infected. The best way to have cartilage pierced is by a professional at a piercing parlor. This will involve needles and meaybe scare your daughter out of the whole idea.

It is a lot better then her wanting to have her nose, eyebrow, nipple or even worse pierced. If you let her have it done, you can always have her take it out if she begins to act out too much. Cartilage heals pretty fast, so if she ever had to take it out, it probably wouldn't show any scars. You may try to scare her into not wanting it, find a website that has horror pictures of people who got botched piercings.

My mom woudn't let me even peirce my ears until I was 13 years old. So, I don't think it should be a big deal. But it does hurt, and cartilage gets infected very easily making it very dangerous.

Too young for piercing at all. Ask her to wait until she is 16 before making such an important decision. Then she will not be rushing in to something she may later regret.

Good luck!!

In my opinion, it hurts less than a normal ear piercing.
To whoever made that dumb remark below; one extra piercing in each ear won't make a person look like a tramp.
I think 420Linda has the right idea.

If you have to ask on Yahoo, it might be best to tell her no for now......Maybe when she's a little older.

Of course, piercings close up, so it's not like a tatoo.....

It wouldn't kill her to NOT get the piercing.....She just wants to fit in, but sometimes it's better to stand out as the one who's not a tramp.
