Everyone is different...some women gain 70 pounds some (like me) lose weight....

The average acceptable weight gain depends on the weight of the mother BEFORE pregnancy...

But in general...20 to 40 pounds is acceptable...

You have to remember that she'll gain :
8 pounds of baby
2 extra pounds per breast
5-10 pounds of amniotic fluid
2 pounds of placenta
4 to 6 pounds of extra blood

and thats just for the "condition" of pregnancy...lets not even talk about the cravings and "eating for two"

It depends on the woman.

If you're of normal/healthy weight prior to pregnancy, you should gain 25-35 pounds.

If you're overweight, you should gain 15-25.

Underweight, you should gain 25-35.

It should increase gradually, and moreso in the last trimester.

If you're pregnant with twins/multiples, it's best to check with your doctor but standard for twins is 35-40 pounds.

This is the average - I'm 22 weeks along with twins and have only gained 3 pounds! And, I'm already measuring at 34! I have just been concentrating more on eating healthy, eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, & lean cooked meats. Staying away from carbs, and white bread stuff. What I eat, is more important than my weight. I also drink a lot of water, and take my vitamins.

Doctors tell you the ideal is between 20-30 pounds depending on your weight and body type. That goes up if you're having multiples. But if you gain a little less than 20 or more than 30 don't worry. What you want to avoid is out of control weight gain or inadequate weight gain (like 10-15 pounds).

Well if you are me you gain 50 because you have to quit smoking. But everyone else has it nailed down. There isn't any CAN in the mix though...you CAN gain 200 pounds but that's not average now is it.
