I might get a hamster and I want to know which kind of cage is best so they dont escape.

i would suggest a metal wired cage with a plastic tray bottom for easy cleaning. I have a glass tank for my two gerbils (another of my sisters' gerbils lives with them) and that works fine. Hamsters arent the big chewers and bedding movers arounders so i would think that the cage i suggested woudl be good.

I find that the only good cage is a hamster cage, you can try your luck with the metal or the glass or plastic kind but for my money, nothing beats a good old fashoined hamster cage.

plastic. most hamsters aren't big chewers so you'll probably be safe in that department. it's easier to wash too, in my opinion. My hamsters sometimes climb and chew on the metal bars cages. i dont know if that's good or not but im just telling you.

They each have their advantages and disadvantages.

Pros (+) / Cons (-)
Plastic
+Lighter (easier to carry/clean)
+Many different designs; appealing (especially for children), eyecatching
+Many come with connector tubes and add-ons for you to be creative with
+Draft-proof (Shavings and bedding stay inside, YAY)

-Exposed edges could be chewed (hamster may escape if your not careful)
-Can be expensive ($20 - $600 depending on how big and how many add-ons)
-Some are difficult to clean (If they are not aquarium shaped, they often have complex shapes that take more effort to clean)
- Ventilation may not be so good.

Glass
+Durable (Doesn't get scratched as easily as plastic)
+Draft-proof (Bedding and shavings stay inside the cage, yay)
+You can see into their little burrows

- Can't clip things on to it easily (Compared to wire cages that are easier to attatch things to)
- Heavier than plastic (hard to clean)
- May break if you dropped it
*Avoid solid lids. Hamsters don't like damp conditions and these don't offer good ventilation (can cause condensation in aquarium)

Metal/Wire Cage
+Very available and easy to find
+Relatively Cheap
+Somewhat durable
+Lightweight and easy to keep clean

-Hamster may be affected by drafts.
-Some hamsters get caught between the bars in escape attempts (pay close attention to the wire spacing)

However, regardless of what type of cage you get, make sure that it is large enough for your hamster. Make sure it is large enough for your hamster to run without bumping into a wall or decoration. Also, if you get any add-ons, such as tubes, make sure that your fully grown hamster will still fit in them and not get stuck. Check for sharp edges and broken wires to prevent injury to your hamster.

To prevent escape, make sure that your hamster cage door closes firmly (preferably opening outward as opposed to inward) so that your hamster cannot push it open. If you get an aquarium make sure that the top fits snugly on the sides so that your hamster cannot slip through.

That's my advice, so good luck

Metal! with no plastic coating around it!

they are chew-aholics! they will eventually get around to trying to gnaw on every single thing they can reach. plastic is possible but only if it's one of those enclosures meant for hamsters, because they prevent them from eating a bunch of plastic due to the way it's designed.
