This Dual-Core Gateway is close to the same price, stay away from light-scribe, the blank media is expensive. Compare HP to this Gateway:

You have to be careful with any computer and keep it maintained or you'll have problems with it. Most people use home computers for e-mail, instant messaging, and playing online games. That machine has plenty of RAM, which is something that should be a big part of your decision, as so many of the new programs coming out in the next couple of years use allot of memory. It should work OK for you.

My machine is over 5 years old now, but I'm going to wait until Vista is released before buying a new one.

We are currently dumping Dell where I work and moving to HP. By the way we buy thousands of computers so it wasn't a casual decision. I do all of the hardware and beta testing and have not had any problems with the HP's. That doesn't mean they are perfect but compared to what was going on with the Dell's it is a big improvement. My only suggestion would be to go to HP.com rather than Best Buy, I bet you can do better on price going direct.

personal experience: junk, dozens of fatal errors/wipe outs, support is horrid, and on. for just good solid home use (or office) get an e-machine. mine keeps on chuggin' along, never any prob's. wal-mart has 'em @ good prices.
